Instead of letting yourself get overwhelmed, start by trying to get support in recovery as soon as possible.
Why Support in Addiction Recovery Is Important
Having recovery support after treatment is important to your journey and long-term success for many reasons. Early recovery especially is hard so a support system will help you cope with the challenges that arise. This can help you prevent relapse. A good support system will also keep you honest about your recovery efforts to help ensure that you stay on track and continue to move forward.
Where To Look for Addiction Support After Rehab
While your partial hospitalization program may have gone over the importance of having a good support system in early recovery, it may not have been as detailed on how to go about getting that support in recovery or where to find it. At Banyan Treatment Center Pompano, we are sharing a few outlets to explore for recovery support after treatment.
Addiction Support Groups
There are numerous types of addiction support groups out there for life after rehab. These groups can range drastically from 12-step meetings to informal meetings at coffee shops. You will have to find a group that works best for you. For those people looking for a little more support and therapies after addiction treatment, an aftercare program may also be a good option.
Therapist or Counselor
Chances are, you still have some stuff to work out after rehab. Going to a counselor or therapist on a regular basis can not only help you sort through these problems, but can also provide support when other issues inevitably arise in your life.
Family & Friends
Family and friends who have been with you through the start of your addiction treatment can be a great source of support in recovery. They saw you at your worst before you got help, and they are closely following your recovery journey. They may be the first to see when you falter or stumble. That being said, not every friend or family member will be helpful. Avoid anyone who you used to do drugs or drink with and instead focus on those who have always been there for you.
Treatment Alumni & Sponsor
During your time at treatment, you probably came in contact with a lot of people who were struggling with substance abuse issues as well. These people can be a great source of comfort and support in recovery because they have a good understanding of what you are going through. Together you can help keep each other on track. Don’t forget about your sponsor either. They are there to help you, especially when times get rough.
With the great technological advances of the 21st century, you do not even need face to face interaction any more to get support. The internet provides a plethora of different resources including everything from forums dedicated to addiction to educational resources on recovery. You can even research the many phone apps related to addiction recovery.
For some people, addiction recovery reawakens their spirituality and their faith can become another layer of support. This type of support can come in many forms including a Bible study or church group. The belief in God alone can support recovering addicts in their journey as they learn to trust in God when they are feeling weak.
Activity Groups or Classes
During addiction recovery, it can be helpful to find a new hobby to help you fill the void that was left behind from your substance abuse. Not only will it keep you busy, but classes and groups can also give you added support for your recovery journey. Now that you are sober you may be in need of new friends and you are now exposed to a group of people who share at least one of the same interests. These people may also keep you honest about your attendance and help keep you on track.
If you are still waiting to take that first step to addiction recovery, our Pompano rehab center may be able to help.
