The Importance of Sober Support

The Importance of Sober Support

People. Places. Things.

All three of these concepts change when you are newly in recovery. Chances are one of those aspects were the reasons life was unmanageable and in the downward spiral of addiction. Recovery is all about growing personally with the help of a good support system and overcoming the need for alcohol and drugs. The main reason to have a dependable sober support system is to prevent relapse. The first 90 days of early recovery are especially fragile, so during these early and trying times, surroundings are extremely important.

Before you decided to live a life clean and sober, there were people you were around and places that you went that were not the best environments. When you made that step to get clean, you made a commitment to your recovery. With any commitment comes sacrifice. The sacrifice that must be made when it comes to changing your lifestyle may include cutting people, places, and things out of your life that no longer correlate with your goals in recovery.

To avoid relapse, surround yourself with new healthy friends who are also in recovery. This can help you succeed in the early journey of staying clean and sober.

With most treatment programs, an aftercare program is typically initiated by the client’s case manager. An aftercare program encourages multiple forms of sober support and typically includes sober living options, 12-step meeting locations, and follow up calls from an alumni department to check in from time to time. Banyan Treatment Center’s home base facility in the beautiful Pompano Beach, FL is in the heart of recovery central. There is a strong recovery community in South Florida and clients are encouraged to stay in this environment in early recovery because of all the benefits that stem from a strong sober support team.

Even if a client decides to return to their hometown and it is not as recovery friendly, case managers will look into the recovery support in that area and relay this information to the client.

In early recovery it is up to the individual to stay true to their process and take the steps to ensure sustained sobriety. By surrounding yourself with sober support you are encouraging checks and balances on your life in recovery. Those familiar with the steps have no problem with calling someone out if they are not making the right decisions to ensure their abstinence from drugs and alcohol, being accountable to someone makes relapse less likely.

The journey of recovery will have hills and valleys to overcome. The best way to avoid relapse and overcome the challenges you will experience is to have a support team surrounding you at every turn.
