When it comes to the summertime, it can be a little bit more difficult for some addicts and alcoholics to maintain their sobriety. There is more parties and for some of us there is more free time. I’ve came up with 5 ways to stay sober this summer.
1. Plan Ahead
It is always good to plan ahead when it comes to social situations in your sobriety. At parties there can be a lot of alcohol and time away from normal routine. If you are recovering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol, you may want to avoid meeting friends for drinks or going to gatherings centered around alcohol. This is especially important to those who are new to sobriety.
2. Be Active in your Recovery
One of the best ways to stay sober is to be active in your recovery. Go to meetings, spend time with your sober supports, help others and stay connected to the program. I know that for me, if i don’t stay active in my recovery I get absolutely miserable.
3. Relax and Avoid Stress
Escape stressing yourself out. Summer activities can be really exhausting. If you are worn-out, you may find your resistances weakened. Make a point to get plenty of rest prior to embarking on any summer activity where you might be drawn to use.
4. Stay with Sober Friends to Keep you Accountable
Having good friends in sobriety can make a world of a difference. I know that when I go to places or parties where some of my ‘normie’ friends are drinking and partying, it always helps to have one of my friends who is in sobriety there with me. If I don’t, not only do I get bored but I can end up feeling uncomfortable.
5. Keep Checking in with Yourself
No matter what happens, continue to check in with yourself! Make sure you are right with your higher power and you feel good in your recovery. If you aren’t feeling right then hit a meeting. Don’t over do it.
